Smith and the park itself opened in 1972. Wolfe's Neck is a wooded peninsula (the "neck") between the Harraseeket River and Casco Bay and is named for original settlers Henry and Rachel Woolfe. The park includes a variety of ecosystems, including white pine and hemlock forests, open fields, salt marsh and rocky coastline.
