Buteo Jamaicensis

The Red-Tailed Hawk is a member of the genus Buteo, a set of medium-sized raptors with broad wings and solid bodies. Adult Red-tailed Hawks have a 4-foot wingspan and weigh up to 3 1/2 pounds.

Habitat: 
The Red-tailed Hawk's preferred habitat is a mix of forest and field, where trees provide perches from which the hawk can swoop down on prey. However, the Red-tailed Hawk can be found in a wide range of habitats, including forests, mountains, fields, deserts and even urban areas.
Diet: 
The Red-tailed Hawk is carnivorous and its diet is comprised primarily of small mammals. It may also prey on birds and reptiles. This hawk often hunts by resting in a high perch where its coloring provides natural camouflage and then swooping in on unsuspecting prey.
Range: 
The Red-tailed Hawk breeds throughout most of North America. It ranges from as North as Alaska to the lower 48 United States.

City of Rocks National Reserve is located in South Central Idaho and is governed by both the National Park Service and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The reserve protects a portion of the historic California Trail and its landscape filled with granite pinnacles and monoliths.

City of Rocks is well known for rock climbing and there are over 700 climbing routes developed. Its granite spires range from 30 to 300 feet high and offer moderate to advanced difficulty.
