With a nickname like the "Green Mountain State," you'd expect Vermont to have plenty of outdoor recreation for families. They have over 200 mountains over 2,000 feet in elevation, 800 lakes and ponds and 7,000 miles of rivers and streams.
Vermont has 52 state parks and there is a state park within a half hour drive of any town in the state. Hiking is a popular activity and a portion of the famous Appalachian Trail runs through the state. Vermont State Parks offer a guide for kid-friendly hikes. Camping is also very popular in the state parks and the more than 100 VCA member campgrounds. The winter months offer downhill skiing, cross country skiing and offseason camping.
